The Spanish tattooer working at “Tattoo Freaks” in Castelldefels tells us about her art, what music she listens to and which is her favorite Joker at movies…
Hi Raquel! How did you discover Neo Traditional tattoo art? Was your artistic career a sort of long journey so far?
Hello Tattoo Life! The truth is that I have never felt comfortable with any particular style. Sometimes they relate my style to Neo Traditional and Color Realism, and in a certain way I don’t like to respond to any specific canon. I suppose it has to do with my artistic career. Since I was little I have painted oil in art academies, then I did higher studies in illustration and in 2008 I got fully into the world of tattooing.
How have you cultivated/developed the talent of portraying the female face over the years?
I have always loved portraying girls! When I started I looked up to Emily Rose or Valerie Vargas, to name a few references. And from there I was creating my style and perfecting the faces. I’m still in that self discovery!
Favorite cinematographic Joker of all time? I saw that you portrayed the Jack Nicholson/Joker featured in the iconic ‘Batman’ movie (1989) directed by Tim Burton, but that evil character has been played by many actors through the years…
Very tough question! (laughs) Without a doubt, my favorite Joker is Joaquin Phoenix. I love too much Phoenix and I think he did a great job. I am not a comic reader, so I understand people who think differently, but cinematically these are my top Jokers: 1- Joaquin Phoenix. 2- Jack Nicholson. 3- Heath Ledger.
Do you have a favourite soundtrack/artist/band while you are drawing, sketching or tattooing?
I have an eclectic taste. You can see me tattooing with Korn, The Smiths, the Notorious B.I.G., Deftones even when I’m nostalgic I can listen to Blink-182, No Doubt or Britney Spears! Normally in my studio I listen to rap and alternative rock.
I found out that you work with six other tattooists at “Tattoo Freaks” in Castelldefels, near Barcelona. I imagine there is some great creative chaos in that studio…
A lovely chaos! Since we started the adventure in “Tattoo Freaks”, Sergi Cortada, who is an absolutely impeccable classic Traditional artist, joined and later on Santi Os joined with his Neo Traditional classic and solid colors! Later my apprentice Zarallosink came in, and every day her talent surprises me more, I am very proud of her! And the latest addition is Margolis, with its fine and detailed Blackwork, the missing piece to complete the Freaks puzzle! What’s new for “Tattoo Freaks”? Next thing will probably be a Black and Grey Realism artist!
Last question – I read your next stop will be New York City. Do you want to tell me something about this 2021 American project of yours?
Unfortunately I can’t tell too much. I had planned to go to the New York tattoo convention and then tattooing in Brooklyn for two weeks, but right now you can’t enter the USA because of Covid. If all goes well and we can travel soon I would like to be able to complete the trip in September or December at the latest. If possible, it will definitely be this year! I had many trips and many projects (New York, Los Angeles, Switzerland, Italy, France, London) but the damned virus screwed them all well. Stay safe for now, and I hope to see you all soon!
